Exploring your sexual orientation is learning about the different people you can be attracted to. Think of it as trying new foods to see what you like and just like how we explore new hobbies, exploring your sexual orientation is about understanding who you are and what makes you happy. It's a personal journey that everyone goes through at their own pace.
Sexuality is a multi-faceted component of our identity that is an extremely personal, ever-evolving and fluid journey. Gradually, society had begun to recognise that one need not rush to figure out their sexual orientation immediately. Instead, we must foster an atmosphere of love and support.
Like every aspect of our identity, sexuality is fluid and can change over time. It isn’t unusual to experience a shift in attraction or our interests, in fact, this is very common. The curiosity that comes with exploring sexuality should be welcomed rather than feared. And by accepting this fluidity, we give others and ourselves certain freedoms that need not fit societal norms and expectations.
It is crucial to understand that coming to terms with our sexuality is a unique and ever-long process. The societal pressure to have a clear understanding of one’s sexual orientation can lead to unnecessary tension and stress. By allowing people to take the time they need, we encourage a healthier and more authentic understanding of oneself, free from external pressures.
The importance of fostering a welcoming and loving environment cannot be overstated. Regardless of where someone stands on the spectrum of sexuality, they deserve respect and encouragement and creating a community that is free of criticism and supports personal development is essential. Every person's path is unique, and by offering love and support, we allow them to embrace their true selves and find acceptance within themselves and their communities.
It’s probably scary knowing that you might like someone who you ‘shouldn’t’, especially given the country we live in, it is terrifying to believe that you might be different. India, like other more accepting and developed nations, has a prominent space for queer people. With the awareness the queer movement has garnered, India is a far safer place to be queer than it was even a few years ago. While there is a long way to go, we have also come a long way.
Sexuality is a beautiful tapestry of human experience, and its fluid nature should be celebrated. Curiosity is a powerful tool that enables individuals to embark on a journey of self-discovery. By providing acceptance and love, we create an inclusive society that embraces the diverse expressions of human sexuality and celebrates the unique paths each individual takes in their personal exploration
